Three years ago the shop was a van, a generator, and whatever driveway the customer offered.
Episode two follows a detailer who ran mobile for three years, then took a single bay, and eighteen months later runs four of them as a line: wash, correction, coating, cure. It's the clearest version of the argument this whole series keeps making: the space didn't change the craft, it changed the business: the pricing, the customers, the calendar, and eventually the payroll.
“In a driveway you sell your hours. In a shop you sell a finish. They pay differently.”
Every episode publishes with a full transcript, because the trades read on job sites with the volume off. Like the pilot, this page is an illustrative sample: sample footage and a sample transcript hold the place until the real episode, which will feature a partner from one of our own parks.
00:15[Illustrative sample. The real transcript publishes with the episode.] “Mobile sounds free. It's not. You pay rent, you just pay it in windshield time and cancelled rain days.”
02:14“The day I got the bay, my no-show rate basically went to zero. People keep appointments at a shop. Driveways, they cancel.”
04:49“One bay was the proof. Two was the line: wash here, correct there. Three and four is when it stopped being me doing jobs and started being a shop doing volume.”
07:36“Coatings need a clean, warm, still room for the cure. You cannot buy those three words in a driveway at any price.”
09:44“I hired my first tech last spring. He asked where we'd be in a year. I pointed at the wall. There's a bay on the other side of it.”
