The story

An illustrative sample of how Shop Talk will tell our partners’ stories. The footage, the story and the transcript below are illustrative. Sign up to hear when new episodes are ready.

Two years ago the shop was a two-car garage with a door that wouldn't close over the mill.

Shop Talk is ten minutes with the people who build things: no studio, no script, shot in the bay with the machines running. The pilot episode follows a fabricator's first year out of the garage: what changed the day the work got its own address, what the power actually made possible, and what nobody warns you about (spoiler: it's heat, then insurance, then the good problem of too much work).

“The bay didn't make me better at welding. It made me a business instead of a guy who welds.”

Every episode publishes with a full transcript, because the trades read on job sites with the volume off. There is no fixed release schedule yet, and every story comes from a partner in one of our own parks.

00:12[Illustrative sample. The real transcript publishes with the episode.] The first thing you hear isn't talking. It's the plasma table.

00:41“My rule in the garage was: nothing longer than eight feet. You'd be surprised how much work is longer than eight feet.”

02:47“First month here I said yes to three jobs I'd spent two years saying no to.”

05:15“People ask about the rent. Wrong question. Ask what a tripped breaker costs you at 4 p.m. on a Thursday.”

08:03“The HVAC guy two doors down: his crew loads at six. Now so does mine. That's not a rule here. It's just what happens.”

10:34“The next bay over opens up in the spring. I already told them: that one's mine.”
